Hot Water System Installation in the Southern Highlands

Most people think about their hot water system exactly once, on the morning it stops working. By then the decision gets made in a hurry, and hurried decisions on hot water tend to be expensive ones.

TempcoFRH installs heat pump, instantaneous gas and storage hot water systems across Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Berrima and the surrounding towns. Every installation is carried out by licensed plumbers and gas fitters, sized to your household rather than to the box that happened to be in the van.

Which system suits your home

Three Types, and the One That Suits You Depends on Your Home

There is no best hot water system. There is the one that suits your household size, your energy connection and how you actually use hot water. Here is the honest version of each.

Heat Pump Hot Water

Pulls heat out of the surrounding air to warm the water, which uses considerably less electricity than a conventional electric storage system. It is the lowest running cost option for most Highlands homes, and it is where most of our hot water work now sits. Needs outdoor space or a well ventilated indoor spot.

Instantaneous Gas Hot Water

Heats water on demand as it flows through the unit. No tank, so no running out and no reheating water you did not use. Suits larger households and homes where back to back showers are normal. Needs a gas connection.

Storage Hot Water

A tank that heats and holds. Simple, proven, and still the right answer in plenty of homes, particularly where the existing setup is already storage and the plumbing suits it. Available in gas or electric.

Our installation process

How a Hot Water Installation Runs

No surprises, and nothing starts until you have seen the number.

1

Assessment

We look at what you have, what it is connected to, and what your household actually needs. Number of people, peak demand, where the unit can physically go, whether there is gas at the property, and what the existing pipework will allow.

2

Recommendation and quote

We recommend a system and give you an itemised quote before anything happens. What we quote is what you pay. If two options genuinely both work, we will tell you that and let you choose.

3

Installation

Licensed plumbers and gas fitters handle the full job: removal and disposal of the old unit, the new system, water and gas connections, electrical where required, and compliance certification.

4

Commissioning and handover

We test it, check temperatures and pressures, and walk you through running it before we leave. Then we hand over the paperwork you will want if you ever make a warranty claim.

We are typically booking a couple of weeks out, and longer once the cold hits. If your system is limping rather than dead, book it before it makes the decision for you.

Sizing

Sizing Is the Part That Gets Rushed

The most common hot water complaint in the Highlands is not a broken system. It is a system that was never the right size in the first place.

  • Undersized, and you run out mid shower every time the house is full.
  • Oversized, and you pay to heat water nobody uses, every day, for the next ten to fifteen years.

Neither shows up on the day it gets installed. Both show up on the bill.

Sizing comes from how many people live there, when you all want hot water at once, and what the system is being asked to recover from. A four person household where everyone showers between seven and eight in the morning is a different problem to the same four people spread across the day.

It takes ten minutes to work out properly, and it is the difference between a system you never think about and one you resent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hot water system last?

Ten to fifteen years for most storage systems, and often longer for a well maintained instantaneous gas unit. Heat pumps are newer to the Australian market but the current generation is built to a similar life. The honest answer is that how it was installed and sized matters more than the badge on the front. If your current system is playing up rather than dead, our hot water repairs and service team can take a look first.

Do heat pump hot water systems work in Highlands winters?

Yes, and this is worth addressing properly because the Highlands gets genuinely cold and the question is fair.

A heat pump pulls heat from the air, so its efficiency drops as the air gets colder. On a Bowral morning at two degrees it is working harder than it would in Sydney. Modern units are rated to keep operating well below zero and have electric backup elements for the extremes, so you will not run out of hot water. What changes is the running cost on the coldest mornings, not whether it works.

Where it matters is sizing. A heat pump sized for a coastal climate will disappoint you here. Sized for the Highlands, it will not.

How much does a hot water system installation cost?

It depends on the system, whether we are replacing like for like or changing type, what the existing pipework and electrical allow, and where the unit has to go. Changing from a gas storage tank in a cupboard to a heat pump outside is a different job to swapping a tank for a tank.

You get an itemised quote before we start, and the assessment costs you nothing. Call 02 4862 5595.

How long does the installation take?

Most straightforward replacements are done in a day. Changing system type, relocating the unit, or upgrading electrical can push it longer. We will tell you which one yours is at the quote, not on the day.

Can you replace my system with the same type?

Usually, and often it is the right call. If your existing setup works for the household and the plumbing suits it, like for like is the cheapest and least disruptive option. We will say so if that is the case rather than talking you into something bigger.

Are there rebates available for hot water systems?

There are government incentive programs that can apply to some hot water systems in NSW, and eligibility depends on the system and your circumstances. Ask us and we will point you at the current details.
