Supply & installation

Air conditioning installation in the Southern Highlands

Every system we install is reverse cycle, so the same unit cools your home on a 35°C January afternoon and heats it on a frosty July morning. We supply and install split system, multi room and ducted air conditioning from Daikin, Rinnai and General (Fujitsu), with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries also available.

Before we quote, we visit your home. We measure the rooms, check insulation, ceiling heights and the switchboard, and work out where the indoor and outdoor units can go. That includes keeping outdoor units away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbours'.

NSW noise rules limit when an air conditioner can be heard inside a neighbour's home: before 7am or after 10pm on weekdays, and before 8am or after 10pm on weekends and public holidays.

Split system air conditioning

A split system pairs one indoor unit with one outdoor unit. It's the simplest and most affordable way to heat and cool a single room or an open plan living area, and most split system installations take three to five hours.

  • Wall mounted units from around 2.0 kW for a small bedroom to over 7 kW for a large living area
  • Floor console models for rooms where a wall unit won't work, such as under windows or in heritage rooms
  • Inverter compressors that adjust their speed to hold the temperature, which keeps running costs down
  • Wi-Fi control available on many models

Multi room split systems

A multi room split system (also called a multi split) runs two or more indoor units from one outdoor unit. It suits homes where you want to heat and cool a few rooms but ducting isn't practical, and it means fewer outdoor units on the side of the house.

  • Each room gets its own indoor unit and its own temperature setting
  • Wall mounted and floor console units can run on the same system
  • A tidy option for older homes without the roof or underfloor space for ductwork

Ducted air conditioning

Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning, sometimes called central air conditioning, heats and cools the whole home from one concealed system. The indoor unit sits in the roof space or under the floor, and air reaches each room through discreet ceiling or floor outlets.

  • Zoning, so you only heat or cool the rooms you're using
  • One controller for the whole house, with app control available on many systems
  • Quiet indoors, with nothing mounted on the walls
  • Well suited to larger homes, new builds and major renovations

Replacing an old air conditioner

If your system is more than 10 to 15 years old, struggles to heat in winter or costs more to run each year, a replacement is often better value than another repair. We remove the old unit, check whether the existing pipework, wiring or ductwork can be reused, and install a new system sized for how you use the home now. With ducted systems, reusing sound ductwork can bring the cost down noticeably.

Older systems that run on R22 refrigerant are usually worth replacing rather than regassing. R22 has been phased out in Australia and is getting harder and more expensive to source.

Air conditioning for businesses

We also install and look after air conditioning for Southern Highlands businesses, from hospitality venues to workshops. Recent work includes Daikin Premium ducted systems for the bar, dining and gaming areas of the Bowral Hotel, and climate control for a temperature-controlled mining equipment repair facility.

Built for Highland winters

Reverse cycle heating sized for Highland winters

The Southern Highlands asks more of an air conditioner than most of NSW. Summer afternoons regularly reach 30 to 35°C, and winter nights often drop below zero. A system sized only for cooling will struggle to heat on the mornings you need it most.

Cools in January, heats in July

A reverse cycle system heats by drawing warmth from the outside air. As the outdoor temperature drops below freezing, its heating output falls, and it pauses every so often to defrost the outdoor coil. That's normal, and it's why sizing for winter matters here.

When we size a system for a Highlands home, we:

  • Work out the heating load as well as the cooling load, and size to whichever is higher
  • Look at each model's heating output at low outdoor temperatures, not just the headline figure
  • Check the cold zone rating on the Zoned Energy Rating Label, which shows how a model performs in a climate like ours
  • Recommend cold climate models where they suit. They typically cost 10 to 20 per cent more but hold their heating output better on frosty mornings
  • Mount outdoor units up off the ground, so defrost water drains away instead of freezing around the unit

Sizing a system for a Highlands home

Air conditioner capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW). Wall mounted split systems run from around 2.0 kW for a small bedroom to about 9.5 kW for a large open plan area, and bigger homes usually move to multi room or ducted systems. A common rule of thumb is about 0.125 kW per square metre, but many Highlands homes need more than that for heating because of high ceilings, older windows and cold winters. We confirm the right size on site. For a room by room guide, read what size aircon do I need.

Authorised brands

Air conditioning brands we install

We install brands that cope with a Highlands winter and that we can support locally for the life of the system.

Daikin

We're a Daikin Specialist Dealer. Daikin's split, multi room and ducted ranges cover almost every home, from a single bedroom to a fully zoned whole-home system. See our Daikin air conditioning guide.

Rinnai

Split system and ducted reverse cycle air conditioning from a brand many Highlands households already know for heating and hot water.

General (Fujitsu)

Dependable split system and ducted air conditioning across a wide range of sizes.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries air conditioning is also available on request. We'll recommend a brand and model that suits your home and budget, and explain why.

Servicing & maintenance

Air conditioning servicing in the Southern Highlands

Regular servicing keeps your air conditioner running efficiently, helps it last longer and catches small problems before they turn into repairs. We provide air conditioning service for split system, multi room and ducted systems across the Southern Highlands, and we service all major brands, whoever installed them.

What's included in an air conditioning service

  • Removing, cleaning and refitting all filters
  • Inspecting and cleaning the indoor coil
  • Clearing the condensate drain line
  • Checking refrigerant pressure
  • Testing electrical connections
  • Inspecting and cleaning the outdoor unit coil
  • Checking the indoor and outdoor fan motors
  • Testing the controller and thermostat
  • For ducted systems, checking zone controls and accessible ductwork

Because every service includes cleaning the filters and coils, it doubles as an air conditioner clean. A split system service usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. A ducted system takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on its size and number of zones.

When to book a service

Ducted systems should be serviced once a year. Split systems need a service every one to two years, or yearly if you run them every day. In the Highlands, spring and autumn are the best times to book, before the cooling or heating season starts.

Spring, before summer Autumn, before winter

In between services, clean the filters yourself every few months. For more detail, read how often should you service your air conditioner.

Repairs

Air conditioning repairs in the Southern Highlands

If your air conditioner isn't working the way it should, our licensed technicians will find the fault and tell you whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense. We handle aircon repairs across Mittagong, Bowral, Moss Vale and the rest of the Highlands, for all major brands.

Common problems we fix

Not cooling or heating properly

Often blocked filters, low refrigerant from a leak, or a faulty sensor.

Water leaking from the indoor unit

Usually a blocked condensate drain or a unit that isn't sitting level.

Ice on the outdoor unit that won't clear

Some frost is normal on cold Highland mornings and should melt during the defrost cycle. Ice that keeps building up points to a fault.

Unusual noises or smells

Loose parts, worn fan bearings or mould in the coil.

Error codes or flashing lights

Note the code before you call, so we can bring the right parts.

Power bills creeping up

A sign the system is working harder than it should.

If your system has tripped off, wait at least three minutes before switching it back on. That gives the pressures inside the system time to even out and avoids it tripping again.

Repair or replace?

If the system is more than 10 to 15 years old, runs on R22 refrigerant, or needs a major part like a compressor, replacement is often the better value.

A common rule of thumb: multiply the system's age in years by the repair quote. If the answer is over $5,000, a replacement usually makes more sense. A 12 year old system with a $500 repair comes to $6,000, for example. We'll give you the numbers for both so you can decide.

What moves the price
  • System size and brand, and whether you choose a cold climate model
  • Installation access: the distance between the indoor and outdoor units, and access in the roof space or under the floor
  • Electrical work: a new circuit ($200 to $500) or a switchboard upgrade ($500 to $2,000), if your home needs one
  • Removing an old unit: usually $100 to $300
  • Ducted systems: the number of zones and outlets, and whether existing ductwork can be reused

Servicing: a split system service costs less than a ducted service because it takes less time. Tell us the brand and model and we'll give you a price before we book.

Air conditioning FAQs

How much does it cost to install air conditioning in the Southern Highlands?

A split system typically costs $1,500 to $4,800 supplied and installed, depending on its size. Multi room systems typically cost $4,200 to $8,000, and ducted reverse cycle air conditioning $10,000 to $18,000 or more. Your exact price depends on your home, so every quote follows a site visit.

How much does an air conditioning service cost?

It depends on the system. A split system service takes 45 to 90 minutes and costs less than a ducted service, which takes 1.5 to 3 hours. Tell us the brand and model and we'll give you a price before we book.

Does reverse cycle air conditioning work in a Southern Highlands winter?

Yes, as long as it's sized properly. Heating output drops when it's below zero outside, and the system pauses briefly to defrost. We size for the heating load on cold mornings and recommend cold climate models where they suit.

Should I choose ducted or split system air conditioning?

A split system suits one room or an open plan area, costs less up front and costs less to run when you only need that space. Ducted air conditioning heats and cools the whole home, and zoning lets you shut off rooms you're not using. If you only need two or three rooms, a multi room split is a good middle ground.

Is a multi room split system a good option?

It's a good fit when you want a few rooms heated and cooled without ducting, or when there's only space for one outdoor unit. The trade-off is that every room relies on that one outdoor unit, so a fault affects them all. Once you're past four or five rooms, ducted is usually the better choice.

Which air conditioning brand is best for a cold climate?

There's no single best brand. Daikin, Rinnai and General (Fujitsu) all make models that perform well in cold climates. What matters most is a model with strong heating output at low temperatures, sized correctly for your home. We'll recommend specific models at the site visit.

Do you service and repair air conditioners you didn't install?

Yes. We service and repair all major brands of split system, multi room and ducted air conditioning, whoever installed them.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

Most split system installations take three to five hours. Multi room and ducted installations take longer, usually one to a few days depending on the home. Installations are typically booked around two weeks out.

Do I need approval to install air conditioning?

If you're in a strata property, you'll usually need owners corporation approval before work starts. Heritage listed homes can have extra council requirements, so check with Wingecarribee Shire Council if you're unsure. We'll point out anything we notice at the site visit.

Can I get help with the cost of a new system?

Some NSW households may be eligible for government incentives or finance for energy efficient reverse cycle air conditioning. What's available changes, so ask us when we quote and we'll tell you what currently applies.

What warranty comes with a new air conditioner?

Manufacturer warranties vary by brand and model. We'll take you through the warranty on your system when we quote.

Which areas do you cover?

We install, service and repair air conditioning in Mittagong, Bowral, Moss Vale, Berrima and the surrounding Southern Highlands villages, including Burradoo, Exeter, Sutton Forest, Bundanoon and Robertson. If you're not sure, call 02 4862 5595.
